More time for teaching and a reduced workload thanks to the Tellus Group’s AI initiative

The Tellus Group’s AI initiative, which began in the summer of 2023, has started to yield results. A new “
” application makes it possible to conduct more educational assessments in less time. The application is being used at one of the Group’s schools, and additional services are under development.

“The new application frees up time for teachers and principals
, which they can devote to personalized interactions
and providing feedback to students,” says Lisa Melberg,
, Head of Development at Tellusgruppen.

In the summer of 2023, Tellusgruppen entered into a partnership with Mathias Sundin, CEO of the Warp Institute, and
founded the company Intelligent School Solutions. The company aims to offer AI-based applications for
to streamline work in the areas of education and administration.

The applications are being developed based on existing research in the field, including research from the Swedish National Agency for Education (
), which has collaborated with researchers at Linköping University. The current focus is on reducing the administrative burden on teachers (
). Among other things, an application has been developed that is linked to student health—that is, interventions that encompass medical, psychological, psychosocial, and special education support.

– All students want to learn and grow, but they all face different challenges
. AI applications can be trained
to interpret signals and then provide decision support to
teachers and principals. One advantage is that AI tools are
free from personal experiences, norms, and biases.

An application that handles investigations into student absences—to determine why students are not in school—is also being developed, as well as an application for incident reports.

– One of our key goals has always been for
to make things easier for teachers and principals, and to provide value to
students by freeing up more time for formative assessment—
that is, the time teachers spend on personalized interactions
and providing examples of what students can do
differently to help them grow.

To be implemented across the entire Tellus Group. A pilot project is currently underway at selected schools within the
Group, where teachers and principals have also been offered lectures on AI by Mathias. The goal is to implement AI applications across the entire Tellus Group.

“The internal response has been positive, and
the participants have developed a solid understanding of AI. In the long term,
the goal is to also offer our AI-developed
applications to other educational institutions,” says
Lisa Melberg.
